Education & Outreach

Sharing the night sky with the community is central to what NEKAAL does. We offer astronomy programs for schools, scout troops, civic groups, and other organized educational groups. Our programs are provided at no charge — donations are gratefully accepted but never required.

Presentations

NEKAAL members have brought astronomy to audiences from kindergarten to college, from scout meetings to professional organizations, across Kansas and beyond. We’ve traveled to other states and other countries to talk about the night sky.

For school programs, presentations are coordinated with the teacher in advance to connect with what students are already studying. We draw on resources from NASA, JPL, and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, as well as Project Astro — an interdisciplinary program that connects astronomy to writing, math, music, history, and art.

For other groups, we can address a specific topic or keep it general, depending on what works best for your audience.

As a volunteer organization, our capacity to travel varies. Groups visiting us at Farpoint Observatory are easiest to accommodate — school classes, scout troops, and civic groups are welcome to arrange an observatory visit. We do travel to schools and organizations when we’re able, though availability depends on our volunteers.

We focus on structured educational programs. For more informal astronomy experiences — or if you’re just getting started — our public astronomy nights at Farpoint are open to everyone and a great place to look through a telescope for the first time.
